It's a competitive world out there, and you deserve a vocal program that meets your needs to enhance your skills.  The Vocal Boot Camp by James Taylor Studios is an intense, immersive, one-week program for young emerging artists, aged 14-21, in the Charlottesville area.

The Vocal Boot Camp is designed to provide the most value for your time.  Daily master classes, one-on-one voice lessons, vocal coaching sessions, classes in stage combat and lyric diction, vocal health and repertoire.

Led by master teachers, vocal boot camp will improve your solo singing skills, develop your breadth of vocal knowledge, and prepare you for the next level. If you wish to elevate your singing and unleash your talent, the James Taylor Vocal Boot Camp is the program for you!

What is Vocal Boot Camp?


Meet our teachers:

James Taylor    James Taylor, M.M. (Yale), is an internationally celebrated tenor. At home in opera, concert, recital, and musical theatre, he has appeared with numerous opera companies, symphonies, and theatres, including the New York City Opera, San Francisco Opera, Gottigen Handel Festspiele, and the Nederlandse Reisopera. He has given recitals in the US, Europe, and Asia, and has appeared in leading roles in musicals.  A talented and sought-after educator, he has served as Director of Opera at Drake University and the University of Alabama, and has been on the music faculties of VCU and the University of Virginia. In his roles as director, he is extensively involved in every aspect of the performing arts, including opera, musical theatre, orchestral, choral, and dance. His students have gone on to such prestigious schools as the New England Conservatory, Juilliard, Manhattan School of Music, Yale University, and the Royal College of Music. Several of his students perform regularly in opera and musical theatre, and have their own theatre companies across the United States and in Europe.  Now the director and creator of James Taylor Studios James dedicates his time to helping students develop a passion for music and acting.

Katherine Nies    Katherine Nies is a classically trained musician with more than 20 years of experience in piano performance, accompaniment, and stage performance. She has studied under Hsien-Ann Meng, Gerda Bansleben, and Marianna Prjevalskaya.  Katherine graduated summa cum laude from Albertus Magnus College with a Bachelor of Arts in English and Spanish while also studying linguistics at Georgetown University. Her interest in the language arts has allowed her to explore her passion for the human narrative and the stories told through music and on stage. Katherine's love for improvisational piano has allowed her to collaborate with Broadway performers, opera singers, and choreographers from all over the world. She is currently Charlottesville Ballet's pianist, a collaborative musician for the Richmond Ballet, and teaches music at her own private studio and the Center for Vocal Study. Katherine's passion for music is soul-deep, and nothing gives her more joy than to connect with others through art.
